The rhizome of Phragmites communis Trin. (Fam. Gramineae).

Mainly in Chinese provinces such as Anhui, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Hubei.

Harvest & Processing
Dig out rhizomes anytime during the year; remove soil; cut away fibrous roots; cut rhizomes into sections; dry under the sun or use while fresh.

Fresh rhizome: Long and cylindrical, sometimes slightly flattened; varying in length, 1-2 cm in diameter. Outer surface yellowishwhite, lustrous; bark loose, can fall off. Nodes annular (ring-like), marked with root remnants and bud scars. Light in weight; pliable, does not break easily. Broken surface yellowish-white, hollow; wall 1-2 mm thick, with small pores arranged in a ring. Odourless; taste: sweet. Dried rhizome: Flattened, long and cylindrical. Outer surface lustrous, yellowish-white; nodes relatively hard, reddish-yellow; internodes marked with longitudinal wrinkles. Light in weight; soft and pliable. Odourless; taste: slightly sweet.
